From Surviving to Thriving -John's Journey from a Child-Headed Household to Hope

At just 15 years old, John childhood ended abruptly. Abandoned and left to care for his younger siblings, he became the head of a child-headed household while trying to stay in school. Every day was a difficult choice between survival and education. With no stable source of income, even finding enough food was uncertain. Surrounded by poverty, crime, and substance abuse, the future he had imagined for himself seemed to slip further away with each passing day.

John life began to change when he was identified through Primrose Community Health Organization's school-based Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRHR) programme at Rail Side Primary School. While the sessions focused on helping adolescents make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing, they also created a safe space where facilitators could identify learners facing deeper vulnerabilities. Staff quickly realized that John greatest challenge extended far beyond access to health information, he needed comprehensive support to remain in school while caring for his family. What began as participation in an SRHR session became the gateway to holistic care.

For the first time in years, John could focus on learning without constantly worrying about where his family's next meal would come from or whether they would have a place to stay. PriCHO provided John with school requisites and covered his school user fees, enabling him to remain in school despite the challenges he faced. In addition, support for house rent, food, and other basic household necessities brought much-needed stability to his household. This assistance went beyond addressing immediate needs; it provided John and his siblings with a sense of security and hope, creating a foundation from which they could begin rebuilding their lives.”

Recognizing John’s determination to become self-reliant, PriCHO later provided start-up capital to establish a small kiosk at his school. For the next four years, he balanced his studies with running the business, learning practical skills in entrepreneurship, financial management, and responsibility. Alongside ongoing mentorship and encouragement, the experience helped him build confidence, strengthen his resilience, and believe that his circumstances did not have to define his future.

The impact extended far beyond meeting immediate needs. After completing secondary school, John expanded from operating a school kiosk into a small clothing business while earning additional income through carpentry piecework. Today, he dreams of becoming an Agricultural Technologist and is actively seeking opportunities to further his education. His ambition is no longer shaped by survival, but by the possibilities he now sees ahead.

Perhaps John’s greatest achievement is not the business he has built or the education he fought so hard to complete. It is the hope he is now able to pass on to others. Having once feared that his own education would end, he is now helping his younger siblings remain in school, determined that they should have the opportunities he almost lost.

"I want my siblings to finish school and build better lives. If I can keep moving forward, I know they can do it too." 

John’s journey demonstrates what becomes possible when vulnerable young people receive the right support at the right time. A school-based SRHR programme became the entry point to integrated assistance that protected him, kept him learning, strengthened his household, built his economic resilience, and restored his hope. Today, he is no longer simply a young person who survived extraordinary hardship. He is an entrepreneur, an aspiring Agricultural Technologist, a caring older brother, and a reminder that when young people are given the opportunity to thrive, the impact reaches far beyond one individual, it transforms families, strengthens communities, and creates hope for future generations.
