Kanyangala Primary School, located deep within Chiawa Chiefdom, serves five surrounding villages and stands as a critical access point for education in this hard-to-reach community. Situated approximately 15 kilometers from Kabwandu village, the school faces logistical challenges that reflect broader rural education barriers in Zambia. Despite these constraints, the school supports a growing population of 285 learners, nearly evenly split between 144 girls and 141 boys.

However, access to education has been significantly hindered by inadequate infrastructure. With only 52 functional desks available prior to intervention, many learners were forced to sit on the floor during lessons. This environment not only affected comfort and concentration but also discouraged regular attendance. On average, absenteeism reached approximately 5 out of every 35 learners per day, a concerning trend for both academic performance and long-term educational outcomes.

Recognizing these challenges, Primrose Community Health Organization stepped in to support the school through a targeted donation of 40 double seater school desks and 1,500 exercise books. Prior to the intervention, the school had only 52 functional desks. The donation increased the number of available desks to 92, representing a 76.9% increase in classrooms seating capacity.

The impact of this donation extends beyond physical resources. By providing adequate seating, the intervention restores dignity to the learning environment and enhances learners’ ability to focus and participate actively in class. The provision of exercise books further supports continuous learning and practice, which are essential for academic development.

Importantly, improved classroom conditions are expected to contribute to a reduction in absenteeism, as learners are more likely to attend school when the environment is supportive and conducive to learning. This aligns with broader goals of increasing school retention and promoting equitable access to quality education in rural communities.
